About CY Calculator
CY Calculator is a free online cubic yard calculator website for people who need to know how much material a job takes before they place an order. Pick a shape, type in the size and depth, press Calculate, and the answer appears in cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters. There are no accounts to create, nothing to download and nothing to pay.
The main cubic yard calculator lives on the home page. Around it sit focused tools for the materials people buy most often, each with its own guide, worked examples and answers to common questions.
Why CY Calculator Exists
Bulk material is sold by the cubic yard, and the arithmetic behind it trips people up in the same few places: inches mixed with feet, square yards confused with cubic yards, and a weight quoted in tons that nobody converted. Order too little and you pay for a second delivery. Order too much and you are left with a pile in the driveway.
We built this site to make those calculations quick and hard to get wrong, and to explain the reasoning so you can check it yourself. It works as a simple bulk material calculator that happens to show its working.
What You Can Calculate
Think of the site as a material calculator for landscaping and building jobs. Each tool uses the same shapes and units (feet, inches, yards, millimeters, centimeters and meters), so you only have to learn it once.
- CY Calculator: Cubic yards, feet and meters from any shape.
- Mulch Calculator: How much mulch for a bed, in cubic yards and bags.
- Concrete Calculator: Concrete for slabs, footings and columns, in yards and bags.
- Gravel Calculator: Gravel for paths and driveways, in cubic yards and tons.
- Topsoil Calculator: Topsoil for lawns and garden beds, in cubic yards and tons.
- Sand Calculator: Sand for paver bases, sandboxes and fill, in yards and tons.
- Square Feet Calculator: Area of any shape in ft², yd², m² and acres.
Together they act as a landscaping calculator, a construction calculator and a quick yardage calculator for quotes, all in one place. If you want the math explained in plain language, start with the cubic yard calculation guide, or browse the blog for more.
How the Calculators Work
Formulas and units
Every calculation follows the same path. The tool converts each length to feet using fixed definitions (1 ft = 12 in, 1 yd = 3 ft, 1 ft = 0.3048 m), finds the area of your shape, multiplies by the depth, and divides by 27 to get cubic yards. Underneath, it is a simple cubic yard calculation tool, and the formulas are shown on every page. Full precision is kept internally and only the number on screen is rounded to two decimals.
Weights and densities
The gravel, topsoil and sand calculators also show tons. Weight depends on the material and how wet it is, so the density field starts at a typical value that you can change to match your supplier's figure. If your supplier quotes a weight per yard, use it instead of the typical value, because it reflects their exact product and how wet it is.
Waste and extras
The waste field starts at 0%. We never add an allowance on your behalf. If you want a cushion for settling or spillage, you choose how much.
How we check the numbers
The worked examples and tables on each page come from the same code as the calculators, and more than 150 automated checks run before any update is published. Our methodology page lists what those checks cover, along with every formula, unit definition, rounding rule and default value.
Accuracy and Limits
The formulas are standard, but real ground is never as neat as a formula. Ground slopes, soil settles, gravel compacts and edges wander, so every result is an estimate based on the measurements you enter. Confirm quantities with your supplier or contractor before you order, and read our Terms & Disclaimer for the details.
Privacy by Design
Everything runs in your browser. The numbers you type are not sent to a server or stored, and there are no accounts. Our Privacy Policy explains the small amount of data that hosting and advertising involve.
How CY Calculator Is Funded
CY Calculator is a free cubic yard calculator, and it costs nothing to use. To cover hosting costs we may show advertising, including ads served by Google AdSense. Ads are labeled “Advertisement” and kept apart from the calculator controls so they cannot be mistaken for them.
Our Team
CY Calculator was founded by two people who still run it and split the work between them. M. Arslan Ashraf leads the site, sets the direction for the calculators and the blog, and writes the material guides on mulch, gravel, topsoil, sand and concrete. Muhammad Asif Khan builds every calculator and writes the guides on unit conversions, coverage and weight.

Each guide carries its author’s name, and each profile lists every guide that person has published. To see who looks after what, from new calculator ideas to accuracy checks, visit the Our Team page.
Our Editorial Approach
Guides and page copy are written in plain language and checked against the calculators' own results. Where a figure is a rule of thumb, such as a typical depth or material weight, we say so and point you to your supplier or local guidance rather than presenting it as a rule.
